Inspiration

Why?

With Go Chess being especially popular in many East-Asia countries, our team realizes that the traditional game set still faces a lot of problems in its manufacturing and portability. Examples such as heavy stones being difficult to carry around; board and stones shift position easily during games and vision-loss players heavily rely on boards that are specifically manufactured.

Who?

The design allows Poppu to enhance the tactile experience of Go Chess via differentiating the texture of black and white stones, hence also designed to be blind or vision-loss player friendly.

What?

Poppu patterns are created using die-cut and letterpress. It is applicable on any kind of paper ranging from 120-220 gsm. Since the design is light and portable, it is ideal for traveling, carrying around and enjoying Go Chess anywhere.

Where?

Cost of getting a Poppu paper is much lower than a traditional Go Chess set, which makes it affordable and approachable to more people. This is because material cost is greatly reduced. The flat design simplifies a Go Chess set, allowing manufacturing process to be much smoother and relatively faster.

How?

The Poppu pattern adapts a cut-and-fold design. It is inspired by Kirigami carvings, a variation of origami that includes cutting of paper. The popping down of pattern resembles black stones; Popping up resembles white; Flat resembles empty or captured stones.

When?

We hope to invite and encourage more people to encounter Go Chess in a playful, relaxing way.
Since Poppu is light-weighted and consumes very little space, it can also be easily mailed across the world.
